In interior design, every detail matters — from the fabrics on your sofa to the subtle fragrance that greets you when you walk through the door. At Lael Mitchell Interiors, we believe the candles you bring into your home should reflect the same standard of beauty, quality, and care you expect in your living space.
That’s why we’ve chosen coconut wax for our candles, instead of the more common soy wax. While soy has long been considered the “better” alternative to paraffin, we believe your home deserves something even cleaner, more refined, and more luxurious.
Soy Wax: A Good Step, But Not the Destination
Soy wax, made from hydrogenated soybean oil, has been a popular choice for years thanks to its plant-based origins. But in our pursuit of the perfect candle for beautiful interiors, we’ve found it has its limits:
Visual Inconsistency – Soy is prone to frosting, uneven tops, and surface imperfections that can disrupt a candle’s sleek, minimal look.
Weaker Scent Presence – It can struggle to carry fragrance fully, requiring extra additives.
Burn Quality – Soy may tunnel or produce soot, marring the clean aesthetic of your space.
Sourcing Concerns – Much of the soy grown in the U.S. is GMO and cultivated using heavy pesticides.
We respect soy for helping shift the candle industry toward plant-based waxes — but like great design, innovation never stops at “good enough.”
